Occult: Demystifying the Tarot #BlogchatterA2Z

Occult

The occult (from the Latin word occultus “clandestine, hidden, secret”) is “knowledge of the hidden”. In common usage, occult refers to “knowledge of the paranormal”, as opposed to “knowledge of the measurable”, usually referred to as science.

This is how Wikipedia defines ‘Occult’.

Tarot Card Reading is known as an Occult science. However, people are unaware of what the word Occult truly means. This is why they confuse Tarot Card Reading to be connected to Black Magic, Spells, Curses, and the like. Naturally, that would be enough to scare people if not put them off it.

This is also why when I mention I am a Tarot Card Reader, I am at the receiving end of strange looks.

When Tarot was discovered in the 14 th century in Italy it was a rage. The rulers at that time thought telling fortunes or predicting the future was not the right thing to do, which is why Tarot Card Reading was banned. However, that did not stop people from practising or seeking it, which is why it was practised after dark when everyone was home and no one was out on the streets. The Tarot Cards were also read in dark alleys so that the Reader and Seeker would be hidden away from guards patrolling the streets and would not be caught and punished. This is why Tarot came to be known as an Occult or hidden/secret science.

There are many facets to Tarot Card Reading.  Among the many, there is a sect of people who call them selves Wiccan – Pagans (more about them in the next post) who practise Tarot Reading of a different kind. They are known to pray to the full and new moon, cast and brew spells and the like.

Are they right, or wrong? Are they good, or bad? I do not have any first-hand information that would be enough for me to take a stand on that or to form an opinion on the same.

Speaking for myself, I don’t do either. All I do is read the Tarot Cards and answer your questions, in broad daylight. As a rule, I read the Cards only post Sunrise and before Sunset.

  1. With each post of yours, it is like a layer coming off, and a new set of information sets into my mind. love your series for it is very unique and interesting as well.

  2. I loved this! I remember reading a book on occult articles long back and at that time it terrified me because of how it had been portrayed to me as a child. It is so interesting to learn about different arts like this.

  3. Occult has very dark images and lots of unknown things about it. Black magic comes under it I guess? But Tarot is just reading the cards, isnt it? Looking forward to the next post.

I loved the fact as to why Tarot reading is called an occult science.
And also the clarification that you read only during the day 🙂

As you wrote occult the image of you with robes from your previous post came to my mind. I think anything that we do not understand we club in supernatural and occult. Thanks for peeling the layers

  6. People kind of form opinions without knowing about the facts. Also, this history about Tarot reading in Italy is fascinating and interesting.
